If you are into social networking sites, then chances are you’ve heard of Foursquare. This site seems to have exploded overnight. In fact, it’s everywhere—even on “Gossip Girl!” Even though you’ve heard about Foursquare, you may not know what it’s all about. Here we’ll take a look at this new social networking site to see what the hype is all about.
Foursquare lets users share information with friends, like restaurants and malls. When you visit a place, say Bloomingdales, you “check in” on your phone or iPod. Your friends then see a map of where you are. Some might think this is a great tool for stalkers. Others think it’s just a lot of fun to see where your friends are headed and what they are doing. Don’t worry, it’s actually very safe and Foursquare has taken safety precautions. Only people on your friends list are able to see where you’ve been. Plus, you have to choose to let other people know. If you don’t want anyone to know you just checked in at the doctor’s office, you don’t have to.
But there’s more to Foursquare than just “checking in.” It’s a game. Every time you check in to a place or visit an establishment frequently, you earn “badges” or points. Once you raise enough points, you become major of a place.
It might seem silly to some people, but Foursquare is quickly catching on. Currently, there are more than 500,000 registered users. There are more than 275,000 check-ins every day. It seems like a lot of people are catching on to this site and are getting in on the action. Will you, like thousands of other people every day, join in Foursquare? This just could be the next big thing. Maybe Facebook finally has a little bit of competition!
