Broadband Internet connectivity is the norm these days. It is generally used to refer to Internet access using technologies other than a 56k dial-up modem. As such there are many different types of broadband connections. The type an individual uses depends on what is available in their area. Some rural areas for example cannot have certain types of broadband due to the use of line of sight transmitters. The technology for broadband can be separated into two main classes, fixed line and wireless.
The main groups of broadband are:
Wireless
This is the newer technology but it has grown in popularity since it was first offered. Speed varies with this type of broadband. It is expected that over the next few years this may well be one of the most popular Internet connections used, especially with the explosion in the use of wireless devices.
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)
This is quite popular with both business and residential users. ADSL uses telephone lines to transmit the required signal.
Cable
This option is provided by cable companies using the same cables that provide TV service. This type of broadband is extremely fast with most reaching and even exceeding 4 Mbps.
Satellite
This is generally the only option available to people living in rural areas. The service requires a satellite dish in order to receive the signal. It tends to be more expensive than other forms of broadband.
With so many choices, these days just about anyone can have high speed Internet at a lower cost than dial-up. The technology is still evolving, so over time faster upload and download speeds can be expected from broadband Internet.
