Change the default router on your password. This is an absolute must as part of your line of defense against prying eyes. Make sure that your password is strong and utilizes numbers, letters and symbols in order to be strong.
Disable the SSID Broadcast on your router. SSID is your Service Set Identifier and it is the identifier or the name of your wireless router. SSID normally broadcasts a beacon signal that announces that your network is available even when it is locked. Disable this so that nobody can see your network.
Change your default router’s IP address setting. Router manufacturers give every router an IP address. These address settings tend to be published and well known, and so you should change the default IP address so that hackers cannot easily discover it.
Utilize WPA rather than WEP encryption. WPA is stronger than WEP in all situations where it is compatible, so if WPA is an option for you to pursue for encryption, then make sure that you are using this stable and more secure form of protection on your router.
Enable your wireless access logs and remember to monitor them. When you check these logs you will be able to see if any rogue access points exist or if anyone is attached to your network that should not be. If someone is on your network that is unwanted, you can change your access code to eliminate them from the network quickly and effectively.
