Reasons Why People Switch to Linux Operating System

The most popular types of operating systems for computers are the Windows PC and the MAC operating systems. However, there is another type of system that is rarely talked about the Linux operating system.

The Linux operating system is an operating system that allows a computer user to run multiple programs and downloads on one single desktop. Every computer requires some type of operating system to be able to operate properly. However, in the past it used to be that people were required to either use the Windows PC operating system or the MAC system. Now people are switching to the Linux operating system and here is why.

Linux is a Free Program. Unlike Windows PC and MAC the Linux operating system is completely free no matter how many times you download it or use it. Many of the other operating systems have limited downloads or require a very hefty amount of money in order to use them. You cannot get a better deal than free with the Linux system.

Multiple Desktop Option. The Linux system comes with the ability to be able to have several different types of desktops running at one time. This allows computer users to run several different programs at one point without using a large amount of the computer resources. All it takes is a quick click of the mouse and you can switch from desktop to desktop.

Lack of Malware/Spyware. It is almost impossible to get a virus, spyware or worm on the Linux system. That is not to say that it cannot ever happen but chances are the occasional user will not have to deal with all the trouble that comes along with malware and viruses on their computer. Since the Linux system is an open source type of computer programing it is hard to gain any type of spyware when using it.

You can find a large number of open source applications for Linux. Let me share some good applications that you should have in your Linux operating system to use it more or less like you have those apps in Windows.

  • VLC Player- Having VLC in Linux, you can play most of the video codecs and video formats out there.
  • Xvid Codec- You might need Xvid codec to play different video formats in your media players.
  • Ares- A peer to peer file sharing network that allows you to share files over a virtual network.
  • Filezilla- A FTP file uploading and downloading tool that allows you to manage your files on remote servers.
  • gOrganizer- A general organiser to manage your notes, reminders, schedules and to do list.
  • Open Office- A tool to do all word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and graphics tasks.

Overall Linux is a good operating system and you must give it a try if you are interested in learning new technologies.
