Like it or not, there are a plenty of people out there who want to get your information in order to steal your identity and take your money. You might even know someone that does this on a regular basis and have no clue that this is what they do. This is why it is important to keep your information safe when you are online, and this includes not using unsecured wireless networks, even if you know and trust the person that is providing the connection.
Many Wi-Fi connections are unsecure, and this means anyone using the Wi-Fi network can have access to certain files on your computer. So, don’t use this type of connection unless you are positive that you have nothing in your public files and folder that you wouldn’t want anyone else to see. You should also not go to any site that requires a password or any other sensitive information. Unsecured wireless networks should be for information gathering purposes only.
It is easier than you think for someone to steal your money without your authorization, or worse yet, for them to steal your identity and rack up a multitude of bills under your name. Most identity theft occurs through the Internet too, so you need to be on guard.
It is important to be careful on unsecured wireless networks, but you should also be careful when accessing the Internet in general. You shouldn’t list your personal information on social network sites because if somebody needed that information, they would already have it or they would contact you directly by email or phone.
There are also lots of forms online that are used to gather your information, many that are harmeless in nature. One bit of advice when filling out these forms is to only fill out the required information and use an alternate e-mail address since spam will probably result in your regular e-mail if you give that information.
