Can Computers Affect Your Health

We can’t live without them, but our computers, whether or a laptop or desktop, could be harming our health. In some cases, this occurs so slowly we don’t detect it right away. Some of the most common effects of extended computer usage on our health are:

Eyestrain

Long hours of sitting in front of a monitor can weaken eyes. The situation is sometimes made worse if you work with long strings of text and numbers. Many doctors believe that computer use will result in eye problems later on.

Backache

Sitting incorrectly when using a computer not only leads to bad posture, but over time can cause serious back and neck aches. Using the wrong chair can also lead to back problems. Frequent breaks to stretch and exercise back and neck muscles can be helpful.

Insomnia

Some people spend so many hours in front of the computer that they do not get enough sleep. It is possible to develop insomnia which has other implications for overall health.

Poor Circulation

Long periods of sitting at the computer can result in poor circulation, especially in the legs. This can cause a clot which leads to having a stroke.

Migraines and Headaches

Computer use has been found to intensify migraines in some sufferers. Even without the condition, many PC users tend to have more frequent headaches. The cause of this is sometimes due to the poor lighting used when working on a computer as well wrong positioning of the monitor.

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)

Keyboard use has resulted in more persons developing a condition called carpal tunnel syndrome. Over time many computer users experience wrist pain and some are unable to move their hand without discomfort. Surgery is generally the only treatment option at this point.

Many of these conditions can be prevented or slowed by adopting the right practices. Many computer users fail to utilize ergonomically correct chairs and desks. Attention should also be placed to the positioning of monitors and the placement of keyboards. Taking breaks after every hour at the PC is advisable.
